CABANON   PUMAR

From open-plan rooms to apple-picking afternoons in the Asturian mountains.

Perched on a mountaintop in Asturias, Cabanon Pumar looks over rolling hills that each morning disappear beneath a sea of clouds. From the bedroom window, the valley below turns into a quiet, floating lake. A three-story house stands at the summit, surrounded by apple trees and a traditional jagar for cider-making — a nod to the region’s heritage and to the client’s sensibility as a sommelier.

Inside, the house unfolds vertically. The main floor is the center of daily life, where living, dining, and cooking flow together in one open space. Walls were torn down to connect the interior with the landscape, and large windows on all sides allow light to move through the space, constantly changing its character throughout the day. Light shifts naturally, blurring the line between inside and out — even after dark. At the core of the house, a glass-block volume diffuses daylight and, when illuminated at night, glows like a lantern. The attic, with its triangular cross section, serves as both storage and a guest room — a quiet refuge under the roof. Below, the basement reveals the original stone walls and the texture of time. This cooler, humid level was carefully restored to preserve its raw sense of place.

Cabanon Pumar balances contemporary form of living with rural memory, creating a home that listens to its surroundings. Here, light defines the space, moving and reflecting across the interior and connecting it to the Asturian landscape
